Telangana suggests using Hakimpet Defence Airport for civil aviation.

The Telangana government proposed building a second airport in the city in order to obtain authorization to use the Hakimpet defence airport for civil aviation. The Defence Ministry would soon discuss this issue.

State Industries Minister K.T. Rama Rao said that the Hakimpet station can operate in a hybrid paradigm similar to Pune and Goa, where the airports are used for both civil aviation and defence, following a recent cabinet meeting presided over by Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao.

Currently, 2.5 crore people per year are served by the international airport in Shamshabad, Hyderabad. The cabinet decided a second airport was necessary due to the city’s explosive growth.
