With the first-of-its-kind commissioning of the “Taxiway Z,” Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is demonstrating that it is the leader in its dedication to innovation and operational excellence. ‘Taxiway Z’ is a carefully planned initiative that extends the current taxiway P, improving airside efficiency and significantly reducing carbon emissions. The reduced taxi time provided by the new taxiway is advantageous to both airlines and customers. The unique idea behind Taxiway Z was the brainchild of the hardworking and effective team at CSMIA, and it has been given all essential permissions by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
With this significant capacity improvement, Taxiway Z makes CSMIA the first airport in the Asian region to provide a flexible-use apron, enabling the interchangeability of the taxiway and parking stand. Additionally, this novel strategy is anticipated to significantly increase on-time performance (OTP) by lowering the entry and exit times for the aircraft, which will be advantageous to airlines as well as passengers.
This ground-breaking innovation at CSMIA is a sustainable move because it permits a significant reduction in the total taxi time following landing and lowers the carbon footprint, supporting CSMIA’s commitment to sustainability.
Taxiway Z at CSMIA is now fully operational, enabling the airport to become a leader in sustainable airport operations and establish new standards for effectiveness.
