Spirit Airlines Begins Expansion in Puerto Rico with Nonstop Flights.

Spirit Airlines’ expansion at Luis Muoz Marn International Airport (SJU) marks a significant milestone in the airline’s 20-plus-year existence in Puerto Rico. With the addition of a nonstop route to Hartford (BDL) on June 7th, passengers can choose from a wide range of convenient, daily nonstop flight options between San Juan and locations in the eastern half of the United States. This expansion becomes the largest SJU operation ever for Spirit, making it easier for more Guests across the United States to fly to Spirit’s most popular Caribbean location.

Spirit has added five daily flights to Orlando (MCO) and two daily flights to Baltimore (BWI), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), and Newark (EWR) in addition to the additional destinations. As the number of flights increases, it becomes easier than ever for Puerto Ricans to visit their loved ones and explore new places.

Spirit Airlines’ senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Bobby Schroeter, said, “Our commitment to Puerto Rico spans more than two decades, and it’s exciting for us to celebrate today with an expansion that grows our SJU service to the largest it’s ever been, now serving 16 nonstop destinations plus increased frequencies to key markets.” Our fantastic Spirit Family members in San Juan, Aguadilla, and Ponce, as well as our cherished airport partners, make our work possible, and we are very appreciative to the people of Puerto Rico for their warm welcome.

The Spirit Charitable Foundation, whose mission is to serve the communities in which its members live and work, has made a contribution to the event. Schroeter continued, “Our San Juan Team Members have been longtime supporters of Hogar Niito Jess, and our donation is in support of their work caring for children in need of shelter.”

Nearly a thousand Puerto Ricans are employed by Spirit and its partners across three airports and its aircraft repair facility in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. About eighty new employment will be created as a result of this expansion in San Juan.

We are pleased with Spirit Airlines’ decision to increase service between Luis Muoz Marn International Airport in Puerto Rico and five destinations in the United States. We have the infrastructure and the people in place to accommodate the expansion that efforts from Spirit will bring. Jorge Hernández, President of Aerostar, believes that the increased employment prospects and commercial and tourism activities on the island will be a direct result of the new Spirit flights to and from the island.

We anticipate great things for Puerto Rico as a market and economic leader thanks to these flights. According to Carlos Mercado Santiago, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, “Spirit’s decision to add new connections from five important hubs in the US and the increase in frequency of flights from four others aligns with our vision and strategy to further develop or air access and strengthen the overall tourism activity, one of the key sectors of our economy.
