Megahubs 2023, the market’s authoritative rating of the Top 50 airports with the most international connections worldwide, was published by travel data platform OAG.
Seven airports in Asia Pacific are among the top 20 megahubs worldwide. The most connected of these is Kuala Lumpur (KUL), which climbed from outside the Top 10 to #4 in 2019. Haneda in Tokyo (HND), which is ranked at #5, is next.
Southeast Asia is home to five of the top ten megahubs in the area, including Incheon International (ICN), Bangkok International (BKK), and Singapore Changi (SIN). At Kuala Lumpur (KUL), the primary hub for the region, 34% of flights are operated by AirAsia.
With 13 airports, Asia Pacific tops the list of the Top 25 Low-Cost Megahubs. Southeast Asia comes in second with 53% of the total capacity operated by low-cost carriers (LCCs) in the world, followed by South Asia with 63%. With 11,188 potential low-cost connections to more than 100 locations, Kuala Lumpur (KUL) is ranked first.
According to Mayur Patel, Head of Asia Pacific, OAG, “the resurgence of Asia Pacific airports reflects their key position as hubs for some of the world’s busiest routes, like the air corridor between Fukuoka and Tokyo Haneda, which has become the third busiest in the world.” The Asia Pacific region’s strategic importance is shown to by the airports’ amazing ascent.
