Dadar station’s platform 2 will be closed, while platform 1 will be enlarged to manage the crowds: Reps for the CR

Platform 1 currently measures 7 meters in width and 270 meters in length. The breadth will be increased to 10.5 meters, it has been agreed. A CR official stated that the work will begin on Friday and be finished in two months for a cost of $1 crore. The official also stated that the tracks next to platform 2 will probably be dismantled to make room for the widening works.
Mumbai: The Central Railway (CR), with the Ganesh festival less than a week away, has decided to close Dadar station’s platform 2 beginning on September 15 due to the platform’s short width, which is extremely crowded during rush hours due to overcrowding, a CR official said on Tuesday. In order to improve crowd control, platform 1, another cramped area, would be enlarged. He also mentioned that platform 2’s shutdown might be long-term.

Given that it connects the Central and Western Railways, it is one of the most significant stations in the city. Dadar Station’s Platform 2 has been a key component, so closing it is equivalent to removing a facility. “They can very well restore the trains once they widen the platform,” said Madhu Kotian, head of the Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh. In order to control the crowd on these two platforms, which serve the sluggish local trains, the railway police have recently started tying a rope during peak hours. Platform 2 is where a number of trains heading Thane and Kalyan begin.

“It has been agreed to increase the width of Dadar Platform 1 to enable better crowd control. The 11 train pairs that used to depart and arrive at platform 2 will be moved to Parel. These train services would be extended up to Parel starting on September 15 due to the extension of platform 1 and the closure of platform 2, according to Shivraj Manaspure, chief PRO, CR.

Platform 1 currently measures 7 meters in width and 270 meters in length. The breadth will be increased to 10.5 meters, it has been agreed. A CR official stated that the work would begin on Friday and will be finished in two months for a cost of $1 crore. The official added that the tracks next to platform 2 will probably be dismantled to make room for the widening works.

According to the CR official, “the widening of the platform will facilitate increasing the width of the foot-over-bridge (FOB) staircase as well.” On platform 1, we’ll also be putting in a new escalator. Platforms 1 and 2 currently have two FOBs.

The closure of platform 2 at Dadar station, which receives an average daily footfall of 4 to 5 lakh, will affect commuters, especially during peak hours due to crowding, claim railway organisations.

Kotian continued, “Now, people will be forced to go till Parel station, which over the years has grown due to the presence of corporate offices, MNCs coming around there.” Additionally, those traveling on the western line also alight here to changeover from fast to slow local trains and vice versa.
