Mumbai: The railway authorities are enhancing the UTS app’s user interface to make bookings easier for users, as an increasing number of local commuters use it to purchase their digital tickets for travel on suburban trains.

The railways have taken various measures, such as facilitating the payment process and expanding the ticket purchasing limit from the previous 2 kilometers to 5 km from the station premises. The cause is the increase in commuters utilizing digital tickets through the UTS app overall, which was 3.50 crore on both the Central and Western Railways as of October of this year.

In October 2022, there were 2.07 crore commuters who traveled inside local trains using the UTS app. The number of commuters using digital tickets and season passes to ride in suburban local trains has increased dramatically, according to railway officials. As a result, the railroads have made improvements to the UTS app to ensure “ease of use.”

In October, 11.67 lakh commuters a day used the UTS app to reserve season passes and tickets for local train travel on CR and WR using their smartphones. In October 2022, 6.91 lakh commuters a day relied on the UTS app to get where they were going. In actuality, 4.26 lakh commuters a day using the UTS app as of April 2022.

Between October 2022 and October 2023, the number of passengers utilizing UTS to book and travel in suburban local trains increased by 70% in Mumbai, according to CR authorities, and by 67% on WR. In April 2022, there were 74.39 lakh passengers on the CR and 53.30 lakh commuters on the WR who utilized the UTS app.

This has shortened a step and expedited the payment process. By extending the booking radius via the UTS app to 5 km, individuals may now purchase tickets or renew passes while lounging in their homes.

We have also made it easier for users to request a new handset, allowing them to do so even when they still have valid travel tickets and passes. The UTS ticket or pass can sync with the new phone in about an hour if the correct procedure is followed. A CR spokesperson stated, “This used to be a major complaint on the Rail Madad app.”
