Following a spike in tourists’ interest in visiting the state, Assam saw a significant influx of over one crore domestic passengers in 2022–2023 (footfall).
The state counted at least 1,00,12,195 domestic visitors from the entire nation in 2022–2023. According to data released by the state government, Assam saw visitor foot traffic of 17 lakh during 2021–22 and 13.5 lakh during 2020–21.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, posted on his Twitter account, saying, “Having been born and raised in Assam’s public life, I can confirm that before to 2014, none would have dreamed Assam would one day emerge as India’s tourist hotspot. This is compelling proof of the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s efforts over the course of nine years to bring about peace and growth in the state.
Assam’s chief minister, Sarma, had earlier said that the state had seen an astounding 575 percent increase in tourist visits during the fiscal year 2022–2023. This time period marked a key turning point for Assam’s tourism industry as the state welcomed more than 1 crore visitors.
