The World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that Covid-19 is no longer a global health emergency, and that based on risk assessments, member nations should eliminate all Covid-19 international travel-related health measures, including the requirement that all travellers be vaccinated.

After been declared in January 2020, this revelation comes just one week before the United States lifts its Covid-19 public health emergency designation on May 11. This follows the decision by the Biden administration earlier this week to end its vaccination policy for incoming international airline passengers, effective May 11.

During a press conference on May 5, World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the virus has been on a “downward trend” for over a year. Although he emphasised that Covid remained a threat, the World Health Organisation said that “high population-level immunity from infection, vaccination, or both” had led to a dramatic decrease in Covid-related fatalities and hospitalisations around the world since the epidemic began. In addition, there is little evidence that the currently-known variations contribute to a more severe disease.

According to Ghebreyesus, these developments have “allowed most countries to return to life as we knew it before Covid-19.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the World Health Organisation estimates that there have been more than 765 million cases of Covid-19 and approximately 7 million deaths.
