Domestic air travel in India is increasing and surpassing pre-Covid levels.

Domestic air traffic increased after reaching an all-time high on Sunday, surpassing the pre-Covid norm. The Ministry of Civil Aviation reports that “on Sunday, an all-time high of 9,13,336 passengers traveled on 5,947 flights, setting a new record for domestic air traffic in India.” India is quickly becoming a significant global aviation market, according to the most recent market analysis report, from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) report. Domestic air travel in India has been steadily increasing, and as of February, it was just 2.2% away from pre-pandemic levels as measured by passenger revenue kilometers (PRK).

“The India domestic passenger market also leads the other domestic markets in the report’s passenger load factor (PLF) statistic, which also includes the domestic markets of the US, China, and Japan.

According to the most recent IATA data, published in February of this year, domestic air traffic in India reached 85.7% of pre-COVID levels in 2022. In December of 2022, the uptick in airline traffic persisted.

Data from the DGCA shows that in 2022 there were 12.3 billion domestic passengers, up from 8.4 billion in 2021 and 6.3 billion in 2020 (when flights were cancelled due to Covid).
It was also predicted that by 2023, the figure will reach between 14.5 and 15 cr.
