According to officials, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s (Maha-Metro) Pune Metro project has begun producing 9,837 kW of electricity from solar panels installed at running metro stations.

By the end of the next year, the Maha-Metro plans to have integrated workshop buildings at Range Hills Depot and Vanaz Depot and 9MW of solar energy coming from stations.

The solar panels at every operating metro station are functioning smoothly, according to Atul Gadgil, head of work for Maha-Metro. The process of mounting panels at the remaining stations is ongoing.

The PCMC to Civil Court (line 1) and Vanaz to Ruby Hall Clinic (line 2) lines are currently open for business.

From Stations PCMC, Sant Tukaramnagar, Bhosari, Kasarwadi, Phugewadi, Shivajinagar, and Range Hills on Metro Line 1, Pune Metro generates 4,430.55 kilowatt of power.

Out of the 12 operating metro stations on Metro Line 2, five stations—Vanaz, Anandnagar, Ideal colony, Nal Stop, and Garware—generate 5406.58 kW of power.

In addition to stations, the Range Hills depot’s integrated workshop building, where a 750 kW solar unit has been placed, generates 2,800 units. The metro depot at Vanaz will soon be functioning.

Officials from the metro claim that “of the planned 9 MW solar capacity, 5 MW will be operational by November 2023, and the remaining by February 2024.”

With the use of solar energy, the cost of electricity is reduced by 85,000 per day, saving almost 25.5 lakh per month.
