  • PMPML made 13.38 crore in revenue despite scrapping 610 buses.

In the last two years, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has earned 13.38 crores by scrapping 610 buses. In order to address the fleet’s depletion, the management has chosen to dismantle buses after 12 instead of 10 years of service.
The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has demolished 610 buses in the last two years, 449 of which were sold at auction for a total of 13.38 crores. Between January 2020 and December 2022, 358 new buses were introduced to the fleet that had been depleted, according to the PMPML administration, during which time the buses were demolished.

The PMPML has scrapped 610 buses in the last two years, 449 of which were sold at auction However, the administration has implemented a new policy, which states that PMPML buses would be scrapped after 12 years of service, rather than 10, and when they have logged 8.40 lakh kilometers in their lifespan of use. This decision was made in response to an increase in the number of buses being scrapped. The action follows the directors’ body’s recent decisions to commission additional routes, purchase more CNG-operated buses, and adopt a new bus scrapping policy.

The PMPML currently operates 2,089 buses, 325 of which are over ten years old and were slated for scrapping, which would have severely depleted the fleet. The committee’s justification for implementing the new policy is that there are many more transport buses being demolished than there are new buses being added to the fleet.
With the exception of Mumbai, the state Regional Transport Authority had issued a directive stating that all districts and cities’ transportation buses will only be retired after serving for 12 years. But in 2020, the PMPML general body decided that the buses would be retired after ten years of use. According to a statement from the PMPML PRO office, funds raised from the destruction of old buses will be used to upgrade the infrastructure of the PMPML, including the purchase of new buses.
